Beat13: Fighting for More Than 13% Survival

By Gary Murphy

A message from Gary's Daughter

I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you.

The support, the messages, the donations, the people sharing this… it hasn’t gone unnoticed. It genuinely means more than I can put into words.

But if I’m being honest > this journey feels a lot like a marathon.

At the start, there’s adrenaline. Energy. Everyone’s behind you.
Then reality sets in… it’s long, it’s tough, and it takes consistency to keep moving forward.

Right now, we’re still in the race.

Dad is nearing his 4th round of fortnightly chemo, and while we’re taking it one step at a time, the bigger picture hasn’t changed. Pancreatic cancer is still one of the deadliest cancers in Australia, with only around a 13% survival rate.

In the time since we first shared this, thousands of Australians have been diagnosed… and hundreds have lost their lives.

That’s why we can't take our foot off the gas.

The finish line isn’t just getting through treatment... it’s creating change. It’s funding research. It’s giving families hope that one day, they won’t have to face this.

So if you’ve supported already, thank you. Seriously.

If you haven’t yet, or you’re able to again, I’d really appreciate it if you could:
• Talk about it
• Support in any way you can

And follow along the journey. We’re not done yet.

We’re still running.

Support my fundraiser to fight pancreatic cancer and save lives.

As many of you know, in February I was diagnosed with inoperable and incurable pancreatic cancer.

I am currently undergoing 12 sessions of chemotherapy over 24 weeks which is scheduled to end late August.

Right now, 75 Australians will die from pancreatic cancer every week, and 12 people will be diagnosed every day. These are devastating statistics that I am determined to help to improve.

Pancreatic cancer remains one of the most challenging and under-recognised cancers. It is currently the third leading cause of cancer-related death in Australia, with a five-year survival
rate of around 13%.

Unlike cancers such as prostate, breast or colorectal cancer where outcomes have significantly improved, pancreatic cancer is often diagnosed late, as symptoms can be vague and easily overlooked. This is why greater awareness, earlier detection, and continued investment in research are so critical to improving survival and giving more people a chance at better outcomes.

13% isn’t enough. Your donation helps us fight for better — for more time, more hope, and more lives saved from pancreatic cancer.

Dear Gary, I'm so shocked and sorry to hear this news. The disease seems to strike out of the blue at the best of us, those who take the effort to make the most difference in the lives around them and who may least deserve it. I know you will take pride in continuing to build that massive legacy you have made for your family and colleagues. While we only worked together a little while, your impact continues indelibly and you often come to mind. All the best going forward to you and yours.
